Our Story
3 students were troubled. While walking
between classes, they had all dipped into the American Apparel store
for a quick peek at the latest spring offerings. Each had decided he
wanted, no, needed something. But their loan-depleted bank accounts and
work study jobs barely afforded microwavable noodles, let alone a new
teal hoodie.
That’s when the founders had an idea.
They could create an online club that would allow their fellow students
to access their favorite fashion, food, and fun for a fraction of the
retail price. They could run flash sales and permanent benefits. They
could reinvent online shopping. They could save the world. And they
could call it Kembrel.
Kemmmmmbrelllll.
The first deal in the spring of 2010, a
small sampling of classic wardrobe staples, was an instant hit. Word of
mouth grew and before they knew it, the three had managed to bring
their happy message of college savings to more than 40,000 students,
with 200+ brands represented. Whoa.
In September 2k11, they upped the ante
with a bigger, better site to showcase their bigger, better deals. They
built it on their bigger, better computers while scootching around on
their bigger, better rolley chairs. Now students all over the country
are no longer forced to make life’s tough decisions between sushi or six
pack. Kembrel means sushi and a six-pack, with a little room left over
for some vintage sunglasses. And maybe a math tutor if that six-pack
hits a little too hard.
